You didn't destroy the feathers; you just trapped them in wet clumps. Natural goose down relies on microscopic filaments that fluff outward to trap air molecules for insulation. When down gets wet, the delicate protein fibers bind together tightly. If you dry the bag flat or hang it up, gravity pulls the wet feathers down into dense, hard knots inside the nylon baffles. The "Loft Restoration" Guide:

  1. The Down Soap Wash: Wash the bag in a front-loading washing machine (never a top-loader with an agitator, which tears nylon fabric) on a gentle cycle using cold water and a dedicated down wash. Standard detergents strip natural oils from the feathers, making them brittle and dry.

  2. The Triple Rinse: Run a minimum of 3 rinse cycles to ensure every molecule of soap is completely flushed out from the dense down cluster core. Residual soap film causes down filaments to stick together even after drying.

  3. The Tennis Ball Agitation: Place the wet sleeping bag into a large commercial dryer on the absolute lowest heat setting. Toss in 3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls. As the dryer spins for 2 to 3 hours, the heavy tennis balls continuously beat against the nylon baffles, physically smashing the wet down lumps apart and separating the filaments so they trap air again.
